Set of Four Mira Chairs, designed by George Nakashima, made by one of his students, Walter Downs, USA, 1956 - 1957

This set of four Mira Chairs was made by Walter Downs during his apprenticeship, working under the supervision of George Nakashima, from 1955 to 1958. Made from walnut and poplar, conforming the original design. The Mira chair was named after George Nakashima’s daughter, Mira and was shaped to the human body. The chairs show Nakashima’s well-known mix of natural form and careful construction, along with Downs’ close attention to detail in each piece.

Two chairs have etched signatures and dates on the underside: one marked “Walter R. Downs 1956”, and another “Walter R. Downs Sept 30 1957.”

Provenance: Private Collection of Walter R. Downs, Levittown, Pennsylvania, USA.
Shows light wear consistent with age. In good vintage condition.
