Pair of early Cassina Utrecht chairs designed, by Gerrit Thomas Rietveld, originally drawn in 1936 for the Metz & Co warehouse.
In 1972, Cassina acquired the Rietveld rights, and in 1988, Cassina relaunched the Utrecht chair. Our pair, estimated to date from around 1990.
One of their specific features is the special stitching, known as "feston steek" stitching, or fisher stitching, a detail that was present in 1936 and remains unchanged today. Originally they were also made out of tarpaulin, another nod to fisher- or sea-men.
Our pair was carefully reupholstered in Belgium with a Belgian-produced mocha-colored mohair, that gives the armchairs character and nuance in the colour.
Designed in the Netherlands and made in Italy, circa 1990.
Shows light wear consistent with age. In very good vintage condition.
